[TenTec] A/B rig testing

Paul,

            I keep a 3-way coax switch on my station at all times. There I can set 3 radios to the same freq. and switch between the radios to do a check of noise, bandwidth filtering and comparison between different mics. My #1 rig is a Corsair II, then the #2 rig is either an Omni C or Paragon. The third switch position is reserved for the radio under test as I compare it to the other "known transceivers".
            Several times hams have been humbled by how good the 20+year old rigs perform compared to their newest wizbang rig. I hope this helps you out. I have purchased a new transceiver (FT-950) just to find out I did not like that new rig any better than what I already had.

I did a little bit of A/B/C testing on 160M with my Omni VII, Peg's Eagle, and my Corsair II. I am not happy with the results.

I was listening to Bernie W3UR down in J7 on a beverage. I just hooked the same coax to each rig, so it was a few seconds between each one. He was not always solid copy on the Omni VII, but was Q5 on the Corsair II.

The winner was the reverse order that I have listed above. The Corsair was maybe 3DB better than the Omni VII, but that can make the difference between hearing someone and not hearing them.The Eagle was in between.

Has anyone else done this? The Omni VII is a very good radio, but just not the best low band one.
