An interesting thing I found is that as my Orion II got older, the master
oscillator got more stable.  I used to have to do the recalibration process
every few month to keep it within my target of +- 5 Hz at 15 MHz WWV after
warm-up.  I think that is characteristic of certain types and 'cuts' of
crystals as they age.

I tried the WWV test on my 7 year old Orion II.  After an hour's warm up it
was 65 Hz off at 10 MHz.  I know that's out of spec but I probably  won't
try to fix it unless it gets worse, say 100 Hz or more.  I'm so much of a
klutz, and the adjustment is so sensitive, that I could very well make it
worse.

radio.  Even from the factory, most Orion's were calibrated about 20 Hz off
frequency since they were probably adjusted with the cover off the radio,
hence with the master oscillator in a cooler environment.  Check these two

Make sure the radio is warm and at normal operating temperature when you do
this because this will vary a little with temperature.  I was able to get my
Orion within a few hertz of actual frequency by doing this.
