The bad news is what you say is (or was at the time) true.

The really bad news is that there seems to be no other choice (other 
than getting lucky at the e-place).   :-(

We appear to be at that awkward point in time where good vacuum tubes 
are either unavailable or very expensive -- and solid state amps are 
also quite pricey. And even if you did get an SS amp, how lucky do you 
feel that the final solid state devices will be available in the future???
