[TenTec] Omni VI Opt. 3 Question

The Omni VI is a crystal mixing radio and does have a few birdies lurking
around.

In an effort to reduce the birdies, I replaced most of the ribbon cables
with longer cables in order to run each one of the cables through a ferrite
donut with a couple of turns. The ferrite was located at the end close to
the processor/logic board. There's some multi-lead cables that use IDC
connectors as terminations. Several of these were disassembled, a bead of
#43 material was put on each one. All of this around the processor/logic
board.

And be sure the 15.3015 and 15.3000 adjustments for the PBT are correct.
These are C24 and R18 respectively.

I was able to get rid of or reduce most of the birdies but again I say
"most". It takes a lot of trial and error to identify and correct the
issues. In my case this was most successful with the Omni VI Plus. The
Omni VI opt3 that I've serviced were a bit different but still birdies are
heard mostly on the higher frequency bands.

Subject: [TenTec] Omni VI Opt. 3 Question

Hello To The Group!

I recently picked up a very nice Omni VI Option 3. It seems to work very
well except for one little quirk. When in the CW mode with a filter
switched in, I can hear a faint heterodyne which will change with the
Passband Tuning control. I called TenTec about this and they informed me
that there was a “bug” which caused this. I found out that if you turn the
VOX ON while in the CW mode, the heterodyne disappears. I don’t know if it
goes away or if it just moves far enough away I can no longer hear it.
According to TenTec, this is a known issue which they never fixed. My
question to the group is: Does anyone outside of the TenTec factory know
what causes this and any possible fixes? I guess I can live with it by
simply turning the VOX on while in CW (does not seem to affect QSK). But I
would like to fix it if the solution isn’t too complicated.

I must say that I own a loaded K3 and often find myself using the Omni VI
instead of the K3. It’s an awfully nice radio...
