Radio Shack used to sell a really nice little 1 amp regulator linear 
supply.   I am fortunate to have purchased a couple way back.  It is 
hard to find that sort of thing these days, but I see them now and then. 
  Small, clean and well regulated.  Maybe you can find something like 
this.
