Mike,

I was thinking along those lines too.
They "look" ok but it's hard to say.
I was thinking about bending a burnishing tool 90 degrees (in its length),
and then just polishing the pins.
It's hard to believe the capacitors or inductors would have died.
Dirty contacts are much more logical, especially because 40m was
intermittent, and the rig has been sitting un-used for about 10 years.

Check the barrel connectors. 

They route rf in and out of the module. 

The prongs get loose, causing the issues your having.
