[TenTec] Corsair II noise blanker

Hi ??? (sorry, somehow I missed your name),

Actually the talk of the "Jones Filter" may not be as far-fetched as you
think.
In the early days of Ten-Tec, Lee Jones was the chief technology officer.
Guess who designed the Jones Filter!

Well in his previous life Lee had worked for a guy named "Art", somewhere in
Colorado - long before their famous S-Line was introduced. In a much
earlier receiver, that company produced a tunable Xtal filter using a single
Xtal. Obviously its flanks were nothing to write home about, but the idea
of a tunable Xtal filter was new and patented. And at that time, QRM was
nothing like it is today, so the filter really was state-of-the art (no pun
intended).

At Ten-Tec, Lee advanced the design, enabling it to work with multiple
crystals. Apparently he changed enough to enable applying for and obtaining
a new patent.

So if we consider this, then let's look at the filter in the Century.
As I said, I've never seen one and really never even studied the schematic,
but maybe its filter resembles the one formerly used at Collins and
therefore somebody concluded the Century had a Jones filter.
THIS IS 100% SPECULATION ON MY PART, but it sure seems plausible to me.

Honestly, I would love to borrow a good working unit and see how they work.
Things have changed for the better here in Europe.
A few years ago the broadcast stations were forced to move outside of the
40m band and they expanded our 40m band from just 100 kHz to 200 kHz. As a
result, most of the garbage is gone and the QRM has spread out a little.
THE CENTURY MIGHT BE A DECENT RIG, NOW.

ANYONE OWN A CENTURY AND LIVE NEAR CENTRAL GERMANY?

Rick,

Actually was only a variable 8 pole "audio" bandpass filter, but somehow
produces some fantastic results in relation to noise as well.
There was always talk that the C-22 incorporated the "Jones Filter" but the
patent on it was filed in 1989 and the C-22 made in early mid 80's 84 ETC.

The early Argonauts were produced prior to the Century-22 so not sure if the
C-22 inherited any circuitry from them?

If you ever come across one Rick, you must give it a spin, kind of hard to
explain the experience!

Yes I remember the outboard filters, in the day manufactured for the
Woodpecker...Now we have neighbors electric fences and grow lamps to deal
with!

Kind Regards... -GL- -DX-
