John, the LO in the OMNI VI is crystal controlled.
It won't have the phase noise that synthesized signals have.

The VFO of the OMNI VI was synthesized, but running at a very high
frequency.
Then it was divided down to the low frequency it was need at.
This reduced its phase noise significantly.

It was a brilliant design, but it was designed in the 1980s, not 90s.  ;-)

I regard the Yaesu FTdx5000 as the epitome of a quiet receiver and, when
coupled with its very successful NR implementation, creates an uncanny
silence between CW or SSB signals, even when there is considerable
atmospheric noise.

Come to find out over the weekend, I could tweak the settings of my OMNI VI
(Option 3) to obtain the same results: total quiet between sigs.I never
tried this out before, because I do like to hear something between sigs just
to know the radio is working and I'm still alive.

Nevertheless, color me surprised that the c. 1990 OMNI holds its own against
the latest and greatest. I was leaning toward selling the 5000 anyway, but
this "discovery" makes the decision easier.
