I spoke with my "Christmas Tree Guru" who's been doing the light thing for
years. He advises the lamps that you are using have an internal resistance
that is too low.

He asks if you have all lamps out or just part of a string? Series lamps,
he tells me, are high resistance. If they're 'popping' the resistance is
too low.
