[TenTec] Slightly OT: Sunspots for propagation? Who needs 'em?

It remains a complete mystery to me why we do not have 3 phase power in all homes (as suggested by Tesla).

With three phase poser, rectified DC power supplies could operate with virtually no filter capacitors (hint hint, no ESR losses). Electronics would be more reliable and efficient, and produce less waste heat.

Motors would always start the right direction (once bumped for phase) so would never need start windings. They would operate more efficiently too.

Only politics, and the relentless battle that power companies wage every day to avoid capital investment in new power delivery apparatus. Instead, we get goaded into buying “more efficient” appliances at higher prices. Then the power companies complain to the PUC that the efficient appliances have caused them to sell less electricity so they need a rate increase to make up the shortfall. Meanwhile your time to break even on your new appliance purchase just got longer by a factor of 10 or so.’Pretty neat business model when you have the PUC on your side…

Full wave bridge rectified three phase power only droops about 3% between phases. This is good enough to obviate the need for any filter capacitors in a DC power supply since a simple active linear regulator after the rectifier can produce virtually perfect DC for use in electronic devices.

Tesla had it right long before these issues became prominent.

Gary

PS: Many RF generators for industrial applications (plasma etching, plasma sputtering and so on) operate from three phase power. Often there is not even need for a power transformer. The 208 3 phase is rectified and directly applied to the collectors of very high power RF amplifiers to offer very pure power at 1000 watts or more in an RF deck that weighs maybe 20 pounds. No transformer, no filter capacitors, no switching supplies, what more could you ask for?
