Joe,
Unless your tuner is broken, which is highly unlikely, I'm sure you are
tuning too fast. The dip might be very sharp. You need to tune very
slowly.
Rather than tuning with the MFJ-259 connected, do the following during the
day when the band is pretty dead:
> connect the antenna to the radio
> place the tuning capacitor in about mid position
> place the switch first in Low 1
> tune the inductor from one end to the other while LISTENING to the radio
for a peak in noise. If you find a peak in noise, note the settings of the
L and switch.
If no peak in noise is found, repeat above but with the switch in the High 1
position.
On one of the two sides you should hear the peak in noise. As I said,
record the position.
If you find none at all, then switch in max capacitance, leave the variable
cap in the middle, and search again with the roller inductor, first one side
(i.e. Low), then the other side.
When you find max noise level:
THEN reconnect the MFJ and you are in the ball park.
Then begin slowly adding more capacitance while watching the meter for a dip
in SWR.
Tune slowly as it may be very sharp.
Once you find a beginning dip, you can begin to play with tiny adjustments
of the Inductor again.
Whether or not you need the additional 1000 pF depends on the length of the
feedline.
I'm sure you will find it does work!

Am unable to tune my 135' HB 2" ladder line fed antenna any lower then 5.2
MHz when using a MFJ 259 Analyzer. All frequencies above 5.2 tune fine. The
tuners rotary inductor acts like it needs more turns to get down to 75m.
Addng a 1000Pf cap t the back of the tuner does not seem to help. Adjustment
of the LO or Hi Z switch does not seem to have any effect. I'm sure I'm
overlooking something but haven't found out what is is yet.
