The sealed can relays are more rugged than the typical reed relay that 
is not encased in a protective can/ shield.  They also tend to self 
magnetize the lever over time.

Those are the two first reasons that come to mind as to why they 
switched to enclosed can relays.

Millions of those designs have been used in instrumentation, military 
comms equipment, and industrial applications down through the years.
They lend themselves to automated assembly much better than the open 
reed glass capsule relays.
