Do they actually fit in slots or was that just a theoretical comment?

Keep in mind that not every radio that claims 9MHz IF actually uses 9.000000
MHz.
So sometimes they don't work.

But maybe this is an exception.
I have looked at that for years but deep down inside I know that I would
never finish building the kit.
