The latter option is what you want.  The one on the back is for something like a dual paddle keyer.You should just change the 1/8 inch plug out for the correct one.

A friend has an old Vibroplex bug with a connecting cord ending in a stereo
1/8" plug.

Does he plug it into the "keyer" jack on the back of the OMNI VI, or does
he need an adapter for the RCA "key" jack?
