i first cover the adjacent LED bond pads with Aluminum foil token them from getting hot.

I then heat all of the pins at once using the small heat gun on my Hakko rework station.

Once all pin bond solder is melted, I snap the board against a safe surface so as to make the molten solder fling out of the holes.

The encoders always come out easily and the board does not get overheated and the pads are undamaged.
