If the rig is not wired for the MIC to provide it power (Omni A, D, C..maybe others), you need the battery.
If rig IS wired to power the mic, battery is not needed.  Omni 5, 6, 6+, others.

I have a Jupiter where battery in not needed, same with Paragon II  (4 pin) 565 Orion as well.

My omni A, and D series C NEED the battery, and an adapter to go from 4 pin mic to 1/4 phone plug.  Sounds great on the older A/C omnis.
