[TenTec] Omni VI Plus w/ TL-922A

Joe
Sharing my experiences and what I've heard:
I have an OMNI VI+ and it seems here to handle keying the older vintage amps
I've used SB220, SB200, 30L1, L4B, L7 better than my FT950 which seems
notorious for rf spike immediately on keying. The relay contacts in the amp
will eventually blacken and the first sign of required contact cleaning will
be receive drop out sometimes when the relay opens.
Typically the operate time on the open relays common to these amps is about
20ms. If you hit them enough with rf in before they switch the contacts get
dirty and need simple cleaning. I've heard Kenwood provided an adjustable
delay in one rig (TS950?) because of that and their TL922.
Major problem here---no---just a bit of a nuisance cleaning issue.
I think W8JI also has some notes on all this on his website.

Yikes Rick, that sounds ominous.
<div>My XCVR is an Omni VI Plus, not an Eagle, but I'm guessing the same
situation would exist.
However, I've been keying an L4B and an SB-200 with it for 20 years without
a problem. I know the SB-200 has an open frame relay. I'm not sure about the
Drake.
Any additional thoughts?
Thanks, Joe, K8MP

Houston, we have a PROBLEM.
The 922 has an open-frame TR-relay that is very slow.
The Eagle sends RF to the amp, long before it is ready to see RF.
This will result in burning of relay contacts; takes a while, a year or two,
but then it suddenly dies.
You MUST delay RF to the relay by about 25 mS.
In theory the Eagle delays the RF by 17 mS.
In reality it's currently only 10mS or even less.
BURN BABY BURN.
The mod Bob just described, restores the delay to 17 mS, but you're still
shy about 8 mS.
The simple solution is to use an external keyer which has adjustable timing
delays.
The WINKEY is one such solution, the keyer I use, the MFJ-495 is another
solution.
My keyer has adjustable delay times!
Do not take this warning lightly!

You need to tell us if you plan to run CW or SSB.
That makes a big difference.

Gents,
Has any one run an Omni VI Plus with a TL-922A? I'm planning on acquiring a
922A and am wondering if there are any things I should be aware of in
advance.
Thanks,
Joe, K8MP
