     There is a "ball drive" vernier in there. Three ball bearings run 
in a groove on the shaft; works like a planetary gear drive. Cleaning 
and re lube might help, but sometimes the brass shaft gets worn and then 
it won't work. Usually it gets worse with use. I had a machinist make a 
shaft out of hardened tool steel (we used a cut off screwdriver shank 
for steel stock) which never wore out and never slipped again. I don't 
think rebuild kits are available anymore. It's the shaft that the knob 
attaches to. If you do what I did, be sure to use good quality steel.
