[TenTec] PARAGON 585 SERVICE MANUAL

Hi, All,

I fixed PLL issues in my own and a friend's Paragon.  I narrowed down
the problems to the offending VCO, then reflowed the solder on any joint
that looked suspicious. I never removed components, except for a few
electrolytic caps that were microphonic.  I replaced them with Tantalum
caps.

Faults can arise in eight the major loop or the minor loop board.

The Major Loop board covers 4 bands:
1   22-30 MHz
2  14-22 MHz
3  7-14 MHz
4  0.1-7 MHz

If just 160 and 80 are unlocking, the fault is in VCO 4.  With connector
90 facing you, VCO 4 is the one on the far right.

The VCO test point is at the junction of Q1-C and Q3-C.  The VCO voltage
should be at about 3.0 V at the low end of each of the 4 bands,
increasing to about 7.6 V at the high end.  You may have to tweak the
VCO coil to get it to stay locked over the whole band.

I do have the Ten-Tec Paragon 585 alignment instructions.

73,

Bob WB2VUF

I fixed them a couple of times, but after a while they do the same thing again. I'm not fixing them again. I don't think you'll find the problem in the service manual. The story is that the boards weren't properly cleaned before the components were installed and the solder didn't adhere properly. My understanding is the only way to permanently fix the problem is to remove all the components on the board and re-clean it then carefully replace everything. There used to be a lot of info on the internet, maybe there still is.
