TopBand: 160m Interference

I seem to remember reading that newer AM broadcast transmitters use
a type of switching modulator that can cause severe interference if
defective or operated improperly. I replied to W0SD that perhaps this
could be the source of his problems...e.g. 10khz switching rate in the
modulator could cause sigs to appear every 10 khz. Are there any BC
engineer types out there that could shed some more light on this
subject?
