Larry is right, the resulting dropout delay could be a problem where
fast switching is necessary (keying relay, etc), but not a problem in
most applications.  There are schemes to shorten the delay, such as
using a Zener in series with the suppression diode.  I don't have the
data at my fingertips, but might be able to find it if anyone is
interested.
