Hi Dennis; 
That is a classic example of the AA5 ("All American 5 Tube AC/DC" ) set. 
Replace all of those caps and it will probably play like you remember. 

You can use disc ceramic, mylar or whatever for replacements, 200 to 400V
ratings will be fine since the DC voltage is only about 125. The values
are far from critical so that .035 can be a .03 or .04 for example. The
electrolytic can be replaced by individual units of equal or higher
value. You can find all the parts at Mouser, Antique Electronics Supply
and others. Sometimes those old carbon resistors change value but for now
just stick to a recapping. 

It may be wise to replace the line cord if it is frayed. This is an AC/DC
set with no isolation and the chassis is hot....do not use a 3 wire line
cord!

That Octal  tube lineup was used from about 1938 to 1950 and was replaced
by the 7 pin minituare versions. With a chassis/model # I could look it
up in my Riders manual.
