Hello fellow topbanders!
Attached you will find an alphabetical listing of callsigns that made it into
the K7K topband log. Conditions were incredible, with 160 sounding more like
80 meters, especially on the first night of operation (I averaged just over
100 QSO's per hour for five hours). The last night of operation, Wednesday
local time, was by far the noisiest. Unfortunately, that was probably when
the guys loading up long wires with 100 watts were calling. It was my
impression that QSO's were limited by my ability to hear and not by the
ability of stations to hear our signal.
Special thanks go to Kimo, KH7U, who handled the monumental task of arranging
all the logistics for the expedition, as well as handling all of the cooking,
generator filling, etc., while we were on the island. Without Kimo, this
trip would not have been possible. Also, Mike N9NS was Kimo's right hand
man. Both these guys contributed greatly behind the scenes, and also did
yeomans duty operating.
You guys be sure to thank Frank, AH0W, for using his own personal funds to
buy the Titanex antenna just before the DXpedition (and, of course, for
arranging the DXpedition in the first place). I'm sure Frank would be happy
to accept any donations you might want to send, either directly, or via QSL
manager KE7LZ. I insisted we get a Titanex, since a battle creek special
wasn't available. Rig was a TS-690S (450S with 6 meters) and Alpha 76-PA
running about 1200W output. Here is a brief summary by night local time:

First in the log was NI6T at 0911Z. I swear, he must have had his hand on
the keyer waiting. I called "CQ CQ CQ de K7K K7K UP 6 UP 6 K one time, and
Garry replied!
First JA in the log was JA1HQT at 1150Z. Contrary to some erroneous reports,
I DID NOT work JA's during prime time USA. I didn't even listen in the JA
window until 1150Z the first night, and even then, only worked JA for 5
minutes before returning to USA. For subsequent nights, I listened for JA in
5 or 10 minute chunks of time, but only when it appeared I had worked the USA
pile down to nil.
I must apologize that, due to a lack of enough operators, we had to skip the
time slot that would favor anyone out to the west (basically after 1500Z) for
the most part. I listened a few times at sunrise and called some CQ's but
never heard any signals.
Andy UA3AB filled in for 2-3 hours of operation, but I handled the rest of
the 160 meter duty. If you have comments, please send them directly to me.
Don't clutter up the reflector.
I will follow up with an article on the Titanex Vertical when I catch up with
everything else here at home. It is a great antenna, although a bit on the
expensive side. I guess the proof is in the signal? By the way, Eric SM0AGD
used the Titanex on 40 meters for most of his contacts on that band with
Europe. It is also a great performer on 80 meters.
Finally, I should thank Bob, K4UEE, who showed me how a first class top band
operation should be done at AH1A and CE0Z.
