A large number of the 49MHz cordless  phones have 1.75MHz or therabouts
for the base to phone side. This means that any power on 160 is going to
leave it a dead duck.

I'd go for a 900MHz spread spectrum phone - unless you can get yourself
an 1800MHz  European DECT phone - illegal in the US, but who would know?
