Steve,

If a long ground rod is not practical, you can use a ground mat or radial
wires.  "Chicken wire" fence material laid under each end of the
Beverage makes a good ground mat. One or more radial wires laid on the
ground from one end of the Beverage to the oppostie end also works well.

The lower a Beverage is, the better its directivity will be; however, its
sensitivity is worse at lower heights.  A good compromise is 1 to 2
meters, depending on local requirements (such as wild animals here, that
limit the minimum height to a little over 2 meters).
