TopBand: Ground screening

There have been a couple of recent posts referring to a broadcast station
somewhere which is using a large number of elevated radials.  I believe one
posting said that when you drive your car under the radials the signal
drops substantially.  I wonder  if one (or more) of our resident experts
might be willing to explain why this happens?
