I use the same method Dave.  However, I cannot bring myself to take the
chance of losing a good sinker.  I use old spark plugs.  Plenty of weight
for 30lb test line.  You can fling them a mile.  And if they get stuck in
the tree it just confirms what your neighbors already believe about you.
