In addition to a great QTH and antennas,  Jack has a big LP advantage over
the rest of North America in that VE1 sunset is quite a bit earlier than
for the rest of us.  This gives him much more darkness overlap into LP VK,
JA, etc.  From my QTH in eastern MA, there is only a few minutes overlap of
darkness at W1 sunset/VK6 sunrise during Dec. and Jan. when we are most
likely to work LP.  

In addition, I know from my long experience on 80 m that the sunset LP path
suffers during high sunspot years and I believe the same is true on 160.  I
haven't heard any 160 m LP signals at our sunset in the last 2 years.
During the winter of '97-'98, VK6HD and VK6VZ were in a number of times on
the LP at our sunset.  On the other hand, I've found on 80 m that LP into
Asia at local sunrise is much better around the peak of the sunspot cycle,
although I've never worked any true 160 LP at this time (maybe this season?).
