I think 600 feet of hardline at 160 meters isn't anything to worry
about...  even 2000 feet should be okay.  If I guess at how the nomograph
looks for 160 meters with even the smalles of hardlines (half inch), it
looks like the loss is around .05 db/100 feet.  Therefore, 2000 feet 
would have 1 db loss - which is probably the upper limit of "tolerable".

For an inexpensive techniqe for slicing coax together - check out
VE1ZZ.  Do a web search for VE1ZZ and "soda bottle".
