Mike, KH6ND/KH5 is QRV most nights from Palmyra Atoll, primarily on CW.
He was scheduled to be flown out on the 17th, but negotiated an
open-ended stay. It is possible that he may still be on Palmyra when the
Kingman Reef DXpedition comes by in October to pick him up!
Mike has 10,000 QSO's logged since his arrival on the atoll, and he is
getting by on 3 hours sleep per night to work as many as possible of the
Deserving! He is a savvy and determined operator.
There is considerable demand for Palmyra, particularly from Europe on
all bands, from North America on 160 and WARCs and JA and others on 6m.
Mike obviously cannot serve all these constituencies at once,
particularly since he is working days to assist The Nature Conservancy.
He is particularly attuned to Europe openings, and has taken good
advantage of good conditions on the short path on 10 and 15m in recent
days.
Topbanders should understand that Mike checks 160 almost every evening
for openings. He is aware that the geomagnetic field conditions have
been good for several days. If, however, he does not find an opening,
he will QSY. Those seeking Palmyra on topband may have to exhibit some
tenacity to snare a QSO.
Mike reports that his recent logs show a high percentage of dupes. He
reminds that, while an "insurance" QSO to back up a dubious contact is
OK, repeated QSO's may pump one's ego but deny another operator a chance
for a first QSO,. This is upsetting to him. Please conduct yourself in a
sportsmanlike way in the pileups---let the other fellow share the thrill
of a New One.
