Topband: radials for verticals

I see a lot of traffic on the subject of radials.

I sort of understand why.  Vertical antennas may be the only
reasonable DX radiator for topband.  Actually, verticals are
probably a good alternative to beams on the higher frequency
bands.  The only problem is the radial thing.

I know that the GAP antenna is a linear loaded, vertically
polarized dipole.  No radials required.  Why isn't there
more traffic on it being used as a solution?

I can understand the mechanical problems involved in
vertically orienting a 160 meter dipole, but I don't
understand why a linear loaded solution to make the
mechanical problem go away has not received much interest.

Is it because that solution is not very good?

Seems that nearly any solution that would avoid me having to
copper plate my yard would be a decent alternative.  Of
course the alternative would have to have a reasonable
chance of working.
