I actually did come up with a remotely controlled precision termination a
couple of years ago, just for kicks.

On the termination side, a small Sony servo motor was coupled to a 10-turn
precision potentiometer.  Coupled to all of that was an optical encoder, a
crude single-crystal receiver and a DTMF board.  The whole mess was sealed
inside a weatherproof box and could be precisely controlled by tones from my
2m handheld.  It worked.
