Not one of the list experts but you may enjoy seeing for your self what top 
loading does. The program VERTLOAD is a good example. See the following:

I designed an antenna for 160m as follows
11m vertical wire
top loading coil 0.1m x 80mm x 35 turns)
top loading wire 22m

compare to an inverted-L in the ENDFEED program--much higher efficiency with 
coil and top wire.
