Using a car radio at the desired spot would only be useful for finding local
noise within
a few Km of the site. Remote powerline and other man made noise sources that
could be far more serious can be only detected by using real receiving antennas
at the site. These sources could be far as 20 miles or more that can
significantly impair the capabilities of this site as far as topband is
concerned.
An temporary Beverage antenna aimed at an desired direction would give you a
good
idea of the noise floor. It would be wise to reaim this temporary antenna at
other directions would provide you a better assessment of the site.
It is definitely worth the trouble to do these tests before making such an
serious investment.
I've been finding noise sources at exact locations up to 30 miles, but
it's real struggle to be noise free in central New Jersey.
