More on radials:

Chapter 3 of the ARRL Antenna Book gives a good blurb on radial length
versus number of radials, with a table showing the optimum radial length
for various numbers of radials. Using this table for 160-meters, the
one-meter rule of thumb is fairly close.

For a given amount of wire, "lots of short radial are better than a few
long ones", i.e., 16 radials 0.1 wavelengths long each are better than 4
radials 0.4 wavelength each.
