Bill,
I use about 30X30 ft of galvanized fence wire under my shunt fed tower in 
addition to about 30 radials. The wire is welded at each crossing point (by 
manufacturer) and all sections are electrically connected. After a little 
over a year I see no signs of deterioration.

I do believe welded joints are important but it can be bought that way for a 
nominal amount.
