Tom,
Have you found any ratio of diameter to length for a loading inductor that
optimizes the Q?
I use a 68' wire vertical, feed at the 8' level with open wire for
160/80/40m. My homemade tuner gives me 1:1 on all bands, but I plan to try a
loading coil at the 50' level for 160m. Will I really see a difference? I
just have to find a way to short it out for 80/40m.

good air-insulated inductor with proper turns spacing as high up in the
vertical section as you can manage. Once you do this simple basic recipe,
there is nothing else that can be done that will ever be any better in the
