My QTH is in a suburban high signal environment with powerful broadcast band stations nearby. I have a 50 KW station on 1010 kc approximately 4 miles to my WNW, a 10 kw station on 760 kc approximately 5 miles to my NW modulating above 100% and a 5 kw station on 910 kc approximately 2 miles to my WNW.
In this high signal operating environment I have owned an FT-101E, FT-747, FT-757, FT-840, FT-990 and a TS-830. The FT-747 and FT-757 produced horrendous signal overload and IMD on 160 meters, suprisingly the FT-990 produced a moderate amount of signal overload and IMD and BUT the FT-840, FT-101E and TS-830 produced none.
I am considering buying an FT-1000MP Mark 5 Field and recently borrowed one to try out at this QTH. It also performed with no overload and IMD on 160. The FT-1000MP Mark 5 Field will be my main rig, with the FT-840 used as a back up for the next 160 DX season. It seems that preselection on the front end of a tranceiver as well as fewer internal RF amps. is a good thing.
