There must be more to it than that.
My vertical has a nearly circular pattern, maybe
0.25 dB "front to back ratio".  The vertical is
at the center of one edge of a rectangular overhead
counterpoise, and the five top loading wires are all
placed symmetrically over the counterpoise.
