Topband: Conditions Last Night

The experience up here last night was quite different.
I called the 5T5 for a long time with no results. I
gave up when it sunk in that I could only hear him on
the east beverage using the preamp (normally I don't
need a preamp), and that the wall of east coast
callers were peaking about 579 here on the transmit
vertical. Yes, absorption was doing its thing and a
true signal report would have been 529! Signals don't
sound that bad as the atmospheric noise is also way
down, and it's sometimes necessary to do the S-meter
reality check.

One day things will get better...
