Paul,

First, the physics of the antenna limit the F/B to one null and establish 
the efficiency (signal level).

Radials are usually considered in unusual installations or when the ground 
conductivity is far from average and that one null is not very deep. 
Feedback from K9AY loop users is mixed regarding use of the loop over 
radials -- whether in/on ground, elevated or rooftop.  If you are installing 
the loop in its typical near-ground manner, I would be surprised to see 
elevated radials be any help. Few users need more than a single ground rod.

I don't have a big enough sample to sort out any pattern why the successful 
elevated installations worked.  One guy can't make his work 10 feet off the 
ground, another has no problem with it.  One ham even put his on a 40-foot 
tower above a tribander and says it plays great.
