Topband: RFC's

After being so overjoyed that I had the K9AY system working I woke up
yesterday to find out that it didn't work. Recall that I put a 2.5 mH RFC in
place of the 100 uH choke called for by K9AY in his plans. Apparently the
2.5 mH choke was on its way out due to age, the relay current, or surge that
got to the RFC, but it was open. I replaced it with a choke with larger
wire and away we went. I didn't measure the current that my relays pull, but
the wire on the old choke WAS quite small. The relays I used are 24 volt
hermetically sealed relays that I pulled from an old APX-6 (That designation
will sort out the old timers from the newbies)almost a gazillion years ago.
If you are building your own relay box it might be wise to take notice of
the wire used in the RFC control box. The wire in the Radio Shack 100 uH
RFC is more than adequate.
