First when you overdrive you flat top the CW pulse and make the sides more  
straight (vertical) you make it closer to a square pulse. A square wave is  an 
infinite number of odd harmonics. when you mix the harmonics to the signal it  
increases the band width so you got a wide signal. oops forgot to add the  
keying  speed into the mix. that also adds to the band width.
 
In the old days using cathode keying we simply put a condenser across the  
keying line. 
 
Any of this drivel make sense.
