Note that aluminum does not hold up well with some soil chemistry.
A good wire to use for radials is #18 insulated copper. It's cheaper
than larger wire, large enough to hold up reasonably well, the
insulation helps it resist corrosion. Electrically, it could be
smaller and still work fine, but is more likely to be broken.
