Topband: K9AY-Loop ?

Topbanders,
i recently built a K9AY-Loop ( switchable N/S E/W on a single Mast), but
i am not satisfied with it's performance.

I notice a good difference in signal when switching from the N/S loop to
the E/W loop (and vice versa) for signals coming in from the side, but a
rather small difference when switching Front/Back for signals coming in
from front/back.
I use a surface mounted device from Minicircuits as a 1:9 - transformer,
maybe this was no good choice?
Or is the ground-rod (abt. 80cm in humid soil) just too short?

Any thoughts?
