Dennis,

I had been using less than top tier receivers on top band so I can't speak
for the best of the Japanese or Ten Tec. I have used a Kenwood TS-570 with
200 Hz crystal filter, a Yaesu FT-857 with a crystal filter, a Yaesu FT-450,
and finally an ICOM 746PRO. They were all crunched badly by strong stations
and made for miserable top band contesting radios. I then moved up to an
Elecraft K3 with the 400 Hz roofing filter. 160 meter contesting is now a
joy. No receiver crunching, and with the noise reduction and the AFX mode it
is not fatiguing to listen to. The difference is huge.
