Ilmo, OHBO hit the nail on the head I think:

I did notice the lack of JAs also on Stew Perry contest.
I did work some 20 JAs and all did come through very well. Most of these
were of course 'usual big guns'. So I did expect to work more weaker signals
but there was no callers.
The propagation was not the reason  I believe.
Was it a busy weekend in Japan or too early morning hours?
Could someone from Japan send a comment?

In that we've not had good propagation all season to Japan.  Many listen and 
like NA, watch clusters but don't tx when DX condx are marginal.

JA sigs have not been good, even when the band has been open to Asia - thus 
the conclusion that they have left the band.  I really doubt it.  Get some 
good prop and watch them show up.
