Harold Beverage discovered that a long wire on the ground was directional in Otter Cliffs, Maine,, late summer of 1918 at the NBD Navy radio station. 
A type of, on ground, receiving wire is now called a BOG antenna. (Beverage on Ground)

The 1923 Beverages at1XAO Belfast Maine were nearly 10 miles long. But not that long in terms of wavelength for frequencies of 15 to 22 KHZ. I have spent many years researching this station
