Topband: Stew Perry Warm Up

Hi All,
Thanks to all stations worked/heard during the Stew Perry warm up this
weekend.
It was the first outing for my new 18m base loaded vertical for 80m/160m and
the first time I've been back on 160m since I tore down my inverted L early
last year with a view to putting up a more weather-robust replacement. It
took a while longer than I'd planned ;-)
I operated mostly to determine whether the antenna was a player or a porker.
I'm delighted with how it performed. I run 100w from a Yaesu FT2000 with a
K9AY for receive and logged 60 pretty much "hear em - work em" QSOs. The
most distant was circa 4,500km east (UA9BA I think it was...). The antenna
does have a good enough ground radial system; the radials are a mish-mash of
36 purpose laid wires (0.15 wavelength on TB), the remanents of the radial
system for the old inverted L (a further 12 0.25 wires on TB) and that lot
is also connected to my 64 radials for my 40m vertical (0.25 wavelength on
40m). I'll post pics and full details on the antenna soon.
I put in about 6 hours from 1730utc to 2330utc Sun before I had to bail out
due committments early on Sunday. Stopping at 2330utc I of course missed the
best period to work W into the Americas. I had been listening that way for
about an hour before I finished up and heard the following stations though I
couldn't work them: KV4FZ, K3WW, W8MJ, W2BC. I didn't hear any others and
most EU stations seemed to be struggling to work across the pond at that
stage. Here's hoping it got easier as the night wore on. I struggled to hear
local stations in the IO locator - GM, GW, G throughout, but some DL and F
stations were very strong at times.
For the record, the other got-aways here were as follows:
RX3DBH, RV5K, R6YY, R3KM, DL7VPE/P, UA4AAC, EW1DO, LY2TS, UA4CC, UA6LCN,
US6EX, OH8JJ, DK3GI, HA8BE, RX6LOL, OK1UKV.
