There is only ONE way to properly install a PL-259 connector and if you are not using that method then anything can happen.  New connectors won't make any difference to system integrity unless they are installed properly.

As for cable, why would anyone use expensive cable like LMR-600 unless it was free?  The losses on 160M with RG-213 are so low that upgrading to a lower loss cable does not make economic sense for transmitting unless the run is several hundred feet.  And for receiving, the losses for RG-6 cables and the like are so low at 1.8 mhz as to be inconsequential.
